1. Matthias Church (Mátyás Templom)

2. Fishermen's Bastion (Halászbástya)

Situated right next to Matthias Church, this Bastion was built a century ago to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Magyars' arrival in Europe. The seven towers stand for the 7 tribes that came from the east.

 

 

3. Synagogue (Jewish Museum)

The worlds second largest synagogue in the heart of the city. The museum has a collection of ritual objects, and pictures of the Hungarian Holocaust.

4. Heroes Square (H?sök Tere)

This square was built in 1896 for the Millennium celebrations. You can see the archangel Gabriel, with colonnades bearing statues of historical Hungarian leaders.

5. St. Stephens Basilica

Built between 1851 and 1905, the dome of the Basilica is exactly the same height as the Parliament's (96 meters) to mark the conquest in 896. St. Stephens holy right hand rests in a side chapel.

 Built at the turn of the twentieth century, this typically Eclectic edifice with a lot of small spikes and stone lace ornamentation is one of the most decorative structures of the capital.

 7. Váci Street - Vörösmarty Square

 If anywhere, the city center starts on Vörösmarty Square. Váci Street, the pedestrian main street of downtown Budapest, sets out from here and the square holds the two most popular cafés of the capital: old Gerbeaud and trendy Art Café.

9. Margaret Island (Margitsziget)

The island is located in the middle of the river Danube between Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge. The 100 hectares of parkland is kept peaceful and quiet by being sealed off to most vehicular traffic. The park is beautiful and very varied: century-old chestnut avenues, English, Japanese and French gardens alternate with ruins of a nunnery, an old water tower and a wide range of sports facilities.

 

 

10. Statue Park

Until the recent political changes in Hungary, the gigantic monuments collected in this park used to ornament the parks and squares of Budapest. This open-air exhibition is without parallel in the world.
